Question:
My active 11-month-old boy was sleeping through the night until two months ago. Now not only does he wake up two or three times a night, but he pulls my hair whenever I go to comfort him. Then he likes to stuff it in his mouth. I think he derives great comfort from that behaviour because he falls asleep.

Answer:
This is a common age for babies to have disruptions in their sleep patterns because of the tremendous developmental changes they're going through, such as learning to walk, babbling, using their hands and solving problems. It's as if the brain is in overload and just can't stop to sleep. Or they fall asleep because they're so tired, but then wake up ready to tackle something else. Keep his routine familiar, especially at nap and bedtime. If he wakes up during the night, briefly reassure him that all is well. It's also common for babies who are gaining independence to want to see those they feel most comfortable with. So extra hugs or stroking your hair is probably reassuring to your son. That said, hair pulling isn't such a great idea: it hurts you, and he might choke on it. Try offering him a blanket, especially one with soft or silky trim. Many babies find comfort in stroking or holding the smooth binding. It may take time for him to make the transition from hair to another object, but it's worth a try. Good luck!
