Is it normal for my 13-month-old not to walk yet?

My 13-month-old daughter isn't walking yet, though she can pull herself up, climb and crawl. Her sister walked at 7 months. Is this delay normal?

You can put your mind at rest: your daughter's motor skills are right on target. Many children don't walk until 15 or 16 months. She may still need time to climb and pull up before she takes that first big step. It's quite common for second children to worry about giving up the security of holding onto something, especially because of the older sibling. No doubt each time your younger child attempts to let go and walk, her older sister comes sweeping by, causing her to lose her balance and topple over. As for your firstborn, it sounds as if she's been very active from the start. Any child who walks at 7 months is a handful. Look at it this way: maybe this time round you can sit down and relax for a few minutes and watch them play.
