FOOD TALK
The benefit of protein, and how much is enough
THE PROTEIN PUSH
At this stage of gestation, protein is vital for your developing baby. It provides the amino acids needed for healthy foetal growth and helps to keep up your body’s strength. Protein is needed for the production of new tissue, amniotic liquid and blood cells. During pregnancy, your blood volume increases by up to 50% and your body is busy producing more new tissue than at any other time in your life. So you can see how important it is for you to make sure that your diet contains adequate amounts of good quality proteins.
QUANTITY AND QUALITY
The recommended daily allowance for protein during pregnancy is 60 grams. Lean meat, fish and pasteurized dairy products are the best sources. Most plant proteins are not as beneficial, so if you’re vegetarian, and particularly if you’re vegan, you’ll need to supplement your diet to ensure that it is rich in the necessary amino acids. Nuts, seeds, pulses and soya products are fairly good sources of protein, but it might be a good idea to discuss your diet with your midwife or GP if you have any doubts about your protein consumption.
