Article Summary
Remember to be good to yourself! If you're feeling physically well, calm and contented, it won't just benefit you - the whole family will feel happier.
MUM CARE:
It’s never too early to start gentle exercises which you can actually do in bed. Twist each ankle to a count of 10, then point your toes for 10, straighten your knees and hold the muscles in your thighs, again to a count of 10. Then, gradually work up the muscles of your body by holding your stomach in for a count of 10, then hold your shoulders down on the bed, stretch your arms up behind your head and twist your wrists. Finally, and this is the funny part you probably don’t want your partner to see, pull grimaces on your face to work your facial muscles.
Not only will this help rebuild muscles, but you’ll find it relaxes you too. So, however much you want to give the maximum of your time both to the baby and to your older child, do make sure that you somehow manage to find time to relax a little between feeds, to eat healthily, and to drink lots of water. Failing to look after yourself will actually result in stress for the whole family, so don’t feel guilty if occasionally you simply have to shut yourself away in the bedroom or the bathroom for a short break between feeds. And don’t let well-meaning visitors overwhelm you. Be honest about asking them to leave when you feel the need to get back to your children on your own. Having to listen and talk to adults with your children’s next meals on your mind can be extremely tiring. Your health and well-being are just as important as those of the rest of your growing little family.
